Ben Stayt – Windrush Farming Partnership

From breeding and showing sheep from a very young, Ben has knowledge and experience beyond his years. He is a fourth-generation shepherd and runs Windrush Farm – a modern pedigree & commercial sheep breeding enterprise in the Cotswolds.

In the show ring, not only has he judged numerous breeds nationally but he has also won multiple championships with a variety of different breeds at most major events. The Windrush name has become synonymous with the Berrichon breed due to Ben’s success at national shows & sales. Numerous pedigree males & females have been sold for both new & established flocks not only within the UK but also internationally.

For many years, both whilst living at home and since the establishment of Windrush Farm, Ben has been an advocate for the Berrichon breed, going above & beyond to promote it for pedigree & commercial markets alike. He believes the breed is an ideal sheep for the current demands within the commercial sheep sector. That is a ram capable of siring lambs that are easily born – minimal or no lambing assistance required, easily reared – grow well from their mother’s milk & grass and easily finished – capable of achieving optimum weights & grades with minimal or no inputs.

Whilst the Windrush flock of Berrichons remains active, most recently, is has been scaled back. Ben’s belief remains that there is good potential in the breed & he sincerely hopes it will be realised soon.

Ben feels honoured to have asked to judge the Berrichon classes at the Royal Welsh Show & he is hoping that this will be third time lucky due to the show being cancelled for the previous two years because of the global pandemic!
