The British Berrichon Sheep Society
The Berrichon is a large white-faced, medium boned, well-fleshed sheep originating from the Cher region of France.
I would like to begin by thanking all members, sponsors, companies, and anyone I may have missed for your continued support of the British Berrichon Sheep Society in 2024. After the successful shows and sales of 2023, we are beginning to see a return to normality following the uncertainty of COVID. This gives us a tremendous opportunity to promote the Berrichon breed to both pedigree and commercial sheep farmers.
We must create a strong identity for the Berrichon breed, allowing us to compete or even lead in the market. In my opinion, the Berrichon ram is the best option for use on ewe lambs and shearlings due to its narrow head and shoulders, which make lambing easier. Additionally, Berrichon lambs are quick to their feet and show excellent growth rates.
Berrichon rams also make excellent sires for crossbred commercial ewes, providing versatility that aligns perfectly with today’s modern market. We should be proud to promote these benefits at shows, sales, livestock markets, butcher shops, and even to consumers at home. Without internal promotion, we cannot expect external support.
I want to express my gratitude to the Council members for their unwavering support and enthusiasm. Their efforts are vital for promoting the Berrichon breed, and I deeply appreciate their dedication, especially considering there is no financial incentive.
As Chairman, I also wish to thank Sue, our Secretary, for her tireless work throughout the year. If you see her, please take a moment to express your gratitude. Simple words of thanks can mean a lot.
If anyone has questions about the Berrichon Sheep or the Society, feel free to reach out to me or any Council members. Here’s to a successful 2024 in shows, sales, pedigree or commercial breeding, and farming.
Best wishes,
Rob Davenport
